Canine cough, also known as Kennel cough, is a highly contagious respiratory infection. Dogs commonly contract Canine cough in places where large groups of dogs often gather; dog parks, boarding and daycare facilities, grooming facilities etc.
Dogs can spread canine cough through airborne droplets, direct contact such as sharing toys, booping noses, or through contaminated surfaces such as water or food bowls. Canine Cough is highly treatable in most dogs but can be more severe in puppies less than 6 months of age or immunocompromised dogs.
*3-10 day Incubation period
Strong cough, often with a “honking sound” is the most recognizable symptom.
Runny nose
Sneezing
Lethargy
Loss of appetite
Low fever
Yes, although most cases of canine cough are caused by bordetella, some are caused by other agents and can be bacterial or viral. The bordetella vaccine can be compared to the common flu shot, it covers a common strain but not all strains.
Typically mild canine cough is treated by a week or two of rest, but a veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics to prevent a secondary infection as well as cough medicine to ease the symptoms.
We have sanitation procedures and equipment to help prevent the spread of Canine cough, however, these measures do not exempt the risk or spread of Canine Cough. In our facility we use a commercial-strength UV system that kills 99.9% of germs floating in the air. We conduct daily deep-cleaning of all accommodations, daily sanitizing of yards, play equipment, toys, fences, and bowls. We require up to date vaccinations, and will not allow dogs to stay at the facility without documentation.
No. Just as you wouldn’t expect your child’s school to pay for their contraction of a virus or cold from being exposed to a large group of people, we do not pay for your dog’s treatment. It is a risk when a large group of dogs gather in one place- much like children or adults congregating and contracting a cold or the flu.
It’s important to note that only a veterinarian can diagnose Canine Cough. However, if a dog is experiencing symptoms we will contact the owner for early pickup, and in the meantime will quarantine the pup in order to keep the virus isolated and protect the other pups in our care.
